Transforming Negative Core Beliefs with EMDR

Transforming Negative Core Beliefs with EMDR

Negative beliefs like “I’m not good enough,” “I can’t do it,” or “I’m worthless” can have a huge impact on someone’s self-esteem, emotions, and behaviour. Fortunately, EMDR therapy (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) offers an effective way to address and change these stubborn beliefs into more positive and supportive core beliefs.

What are Core Beliefs?

Core beliefs are deep-rooted, general assumptions we have about ourselves, others, and the world. They are ideas that we know are not entirely true, but feel real to us. We usually develop these beliefs over the course of our development. They influence the way we think, feel, and react. Negative core beliefs can lead to problems such as low self-esteem, anxiety, depression, and relationship issues. Traumatic experiences in the past, such as bullying, (sexual) abuse, neglect, or a lack of safety and support, can contribute to the development of these negative ideas.

EMDR and Transforming Core Beliefs

EMDR has proven to be very effective in changing negative core beliefs. Together with the therapist, you’ll explore the events that seem to prove your negative core belief emotionally true. In an EMDR session, you’re asked to think about the unpleasant event that seems to prove your negative core belief. When the memory of the event is retrieved, including the images, thoughts, and feelings, the bilateral stimulation (such as eye movements or listening to taps) is offered. This process sets the memory processing in motion and continues until the event no longer evokes distressing feelings or tension. Over time, the negative belief can gradually be replaced by a more positive, supportive core belief.

How EMDR Works

It is believed that the bilateral stimulation during EMDR treatment occupies the brain’s processing capacity to the extent that the traumatic memory can no longer be well encoded. This allows the memory to be “recategorized” in the brain without the same emotional charge. The bilateral stimulation also seems to stimulate the brain to make new neural connections between the areas involved in the reactions to traumatic events. This can lead to a shift in perspective on the event and create space for more positive emotions and memories.

The Profound Impact of Transforming Core Beliefs

This transformation of core beliefs can have a profound, lasting impact on the client’s well-being and functioning. In addition to the treatment of PTSD, EMDR has proven to be a powerful technique to address and change stubborn, negative core beliefs into more positive, supportive beliefs. Clients can break free from limiting assumptions about themselves and the world and develop a healthier, more positive self-image.
